Hi there
I wondered if anyone had had any luck in 'translating' some pop songs into Signalong? I love the Christmas Carols but unfortunately they are only good for a part of the year!
I have seen some fab videos on Youtube but they are in BSL etc. but think it's a fab idea and just wondered if anyone had had any luck with Signalong.
Or even if people think this is a good idea or that it would be too complicated for younger children?
Have Signalong ever considered publishing some signs to accompany pop songs? But I guess then Copyright comes into play...
Your thoughts would be welcome.
Thanks
Andy

Hi Andy,
As you say, there is a copyright issue. We could chance our arm in the hope that we get away with it because we're a charity, but we do depend on our own intellectual property rights for most of our income so it would be a bit hypocritical.
We do provide signs on request, and if they happen to coincide with the key words in some songs that's OK, but we're not going to publish them as such.
It's not quite the same as pop songs, but we do have the Respect Songbook & CD, with songs by Alison Burns, professional recorded. It was written for a secondary SLD school so it's a step away from the nursery rhymes. "Sunshine In My Heart" was used by Afasic for a world record in singing and signing in 2008 - that's on the disc. You can probably still find YouTube videos of that.

Thanks for the swift reply Mike, as I said totally understandable about the copyright issue.
I might try and look at the lyrics for an Adele song or a Lady Gaga one and see what signs I already have and what I am missing. If it's only a couple I might email in for the signs, otherwise I may look and see if the majority are in another manual, I could do with another Basic Vocabulary one to be honest!
I know what the kids would love is Mamma Mia!
Thanks again
Andy

I'm not really sure, I wanted something either well known or something current e.g. Lady Gaga/Adele. To be honest I think even the chorus of a song would be enough for now and would involve less signs. Better if the song is a bit slow as well as it could end up being a 'bit of a mouthful' with signing quickly.
Open to suggestions of songs!
Then I was going to check the lyrics out online and match the words up to the manuals I already have.

Oh cool I would be interested in seeing that to be honest.
I have decided on Rihanna's "Only Girl in the World" and start with the chorus. It's not too bad:
"Want you to make me feel like I'm the only girl in the world Like I'm the only one that you'll ever love Like I'm the only one who knows your heart Only girl in the world... Like I'm the only one that's in command Cuz I'm the only one who understands how to make you feel like a man Want you to make me feel like I'm the only girl in the world Like I'm the only one that you'll ever love Like I'm the only one who knows your heart Only one..."
Just going through my manuals now, thank goodness for the indexes!!
Thanks
Andy

Thanks Ryan, there is hope yet then!
Have to say I have been slow in putting all the signs together from my Manuals for the Rhianna song but will try again this weekend. Work gets in the way unfortunately!

Hi Andy, At my school, we are doing just that. I have a wonderful friend who has started a Signing Choir as a lunch time activity, the students choose their favourite songs and then we work together to find signs that fit (and make sense) we have just "translated" We are all in this together from High School Musical. I am sure Cheryl would be happy to share, please email me at liz.b@chorleymayfield.lancs.sch.uk Liz

Hi, I'm always doing pop songs with the children I teach. The last one we did was the Olympic Mascot theme song. We've done 'fireworks' for a school production, Bob Marley, the works. The kids love it. The key to it is to break it down in to the key words in the song. Don't try and sign more than a couple of words from each sentence - their hands won't move that quickly. Sometimes you only need one word per line. If you want any suggestions, let me know.
Go for it though, it's such good fun. And the kids - and adults - remember the signs so much quicker. Jo

New Kids on the Block is my favourite pop-band of 90s. NKOTB had so many hit songs! The ones I remember are 'Tonight', 'Baby, I Believe In You' and, of course their hit 'Step By Step'. These are real masterpieces, not garbage like today! And it is sooo good they have a tour in 2019! And I'm going to visit New Kids on the Block concert in 2019. The tour dates is here: New Kids on the Block tour dates. Click on it and maybe we can even visit one of the performances together!
